Breast implant removal

Breast Implant Removal

Breast implants are mechanical devices that can’t be considered to last forever, although some can last twenty years or more. It is common for revision surgery, removal or replacement to take place in the person’s lifetime. There are many causes for implants being removed but the commonest reasons are capsular contracture and implant rupture.

Capsular Contracture

When an implant is inserted, a thin barrier shell made up of fibrous tissue is naturally produced around it called a capsule. If there is a problem with the implant, the body can react to cause thickening of the capsule and can cause distortion and discomfort of the breast. When implants are removed, the capsules may also have to be removed at the same time, which can be a more complex procedure.

Implant Rupture

All types of breast implants have an outer, silicone shell that can potentially develop a tear or hole called a rupture. The chance that an implant will rupture or leak increases over time. Modern breast implants have a laminated silicone shell, which provides protection against leakage but this can be damaged by injury or vigorous contact. The silicone content of the implant can remain within the capsule around the implant or may migrate into the breast tissue, lymph nodes in the armpit or other areas in the body.
